Issues in Science



To access the Media Center subscription databases:

Go to the BRRHS home page: http://www.brrsd.k12.nj.us/highschool.cfm
On Left sidebar - Select HS Library
You will be directed to the BRRHS Library Webpage, where you can view a list of all the Subscription Databases. Click on the link to the database that you want to search and enter the User ID and Password in the login page.

eLibrary Science
This database will provide you with broad coverage of topics, with a focus on scientific information. Covers legal and ethical perspectives.

Science Online
Focus is more on scientific data/information rather than commentary or argument over issues.

Global Issues in Context
Provides a worldwide perspective on a wide range of topics.
Select the Health & Medicine or Science & Technology or Environment & Climate Change tabs to view a list of links leading to related articles.

SIRS
Provides both pro and con views on issues. Use the Leading Issues list to search the most popular topics. Or use the Quick Search box to type in a Keyword (results will be a list of articles with your search term anywhere in the article) or Subject Heading (results will be a list of categories under which relevant articles are indexed) search term.
You can use the Basic Search to retrieve articles under broad topic areas, or you can use the Advanced Search to combine terms to narrow your search (i.e., by specifying specific fields for your search term or by using Boolean Operators).
Your results list can be viewed by type of publication (i.e., Reference, Newspaper, etc.) by clicking on the appropriate tabs.
To obtain citation elements click on the Source tab.

Opposing Viewpoints
Provides both pro and con views on issues. Use the Subject Guide search to browse narrower sub-topics under a broad subject.
You can search by selecting from the Popular Topics list or you can do a search by typing your keyword into the search box.
Your results list can be viewed by type of publication (i.e., Reference, Newspaper, etc.) by clicking on the appropriate tabs.
You can mark articles by selecting the check-box next to relevant articles and then email or get citations for only these articles.
Citation information is at the end of each article.

EBSCO Host:
Provides both pro and con views on issues. Click on the Ebsco database that you wish to search (Point of View). Enter your keyword; make sure that the Full Text Articles Only box is checked. Click on the Citation icon at the top of each article to obtain citation components.

Custom Newspapers
Current issues of teh New York Times, along with numerous other newspapers.

New York Times
Provides articles from this publication from 1865 - 2001.
